The State of the Gaming Industry

Ken Hite (author of Gaming Report’s Out of the Box column, and many RPG supplements) has some interesting things to say about the gaming industry. His latest article (which can be found here) discusses the future of roleplaying games and the companies that produce them.

To boil things down, Hite says that the majority of RPG publishers are neglecting the book trade and perpetuating a downwards spiral in the industry with a periodical-approach to RPG publishing.

Is he right? I haven’t got a good answer to that, but he feels right to me. Running the game store in Ithaca has certainly helped to focus my perspective on the gaming industry from a retailer’s perspective; I’m still trying to get a handle on the publisher’s perspective.
