Waste of a day

I’ve been totally distracted since yesterday afternoon because RPGnow and DrivethruRPG (the two largest PDF retailers on the internet) announced the merger of their businesses. The whole things has been nearly as big a tempest as the site split of RPGnow last year.

To say that folks are upset is . . . difficult actually. There is a vocal minority of manufacturers that are quite upset with the changes that have been announced because of the merger, mainly the increase in operating percentage that the new merged business plans to take (or, in other words, the reduction in percentage earnings passed on to the manufacturers).

The majority of manufacturers are staying quiet. I think that, like myself, they are taking a ‘wait and see’ attitude to the situation. On the one hand, I don’t like paying more for what appears, on the face of it, to be the same service. On the other, there are ‘expectations’ by the new business owners that the merger will result in higher traffic and, thus, higher sales. I don’t fully know what to expect yet, but like I said . . .

And, then there are the small group of optimistic manufacturers that believe everything will be rainbows and ponies (i.e. everything will work out for the best). They all seem to be from the DTRPG camp of folks that were already paying the higher rates. For them I guess it’s a sort of win. After all, they get a tighter network without an increase in their rates.

So, I’ve spent all day playing message-board tag, trying to keep up with the various discussions about the merger. Which, of course, means that the writing that I had planned on doing today didn’t happen.

What a waste of a day.

Looks like the meger is already costing you money, then, if fretting over it is keeping you from writing, eh?

How is the game business going? Isn’t it every gamer’s fantasy to be a publisher?

Actually, I think it is the dream of many gamers to be a game designer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy being a small game publisher because it gives me lots of opportunities to different things, like marketing, layout, graphic design, typography, etc.

    Sometimes, though, it’s a little rough. ๐Ÿ™‚
