Long-term Reading

I’ve been reading this book, on and off, for about fifteen years now. It’s called Finite and Infinite Games and was written by James P. Carse. I have no idea if the gentleman ever wrote another book but I mention his name because I think it would be rude not to. (And a quick Amazon search shows that he has, in fact, authored other books but that I would have been happier not knowing.)

Anyway, I’ve been reading this book for nearly fifteen years. Generally, my M.O. in this case is that I pick it up, start reading at the beginning, and then, after a couple weeks, put it down again.

Now, unlike a novel which I can burn through in anywhere from three days to a week, this book requires contemplation. The book is broken up into small chunks, each one providing a new expansion of the basic premise. As you go along, these chunks get larger and more complex. Overall, I like this format.

So, the upshot is: I’ve started the book again. Someday I intend to finish it. Maybe this will be the year.
