Guardians of the Realm

The basic premise of my new fantasy RPG resolves around the Guardians of the Realm. The Guardians are a group of men and women that have been chosen and trained to protect the Realm from dangers within and without.

Guardian come from diverse backgrounds. Not only are they drawn from courageous volunteers from every corner of the Realm, they are also drawn from orphans, and criminals.

The Realms send criminals and orphans to serve as Guardians because the job is difficult, dangerous, and has a relatively high mortality rate. The Guardians also teach displine.

The Guardians are based in the mountains. They are the first line of defense for the Realm from the lands beyond. Guardians are trained to live and fight in the wilderness.

The Guardians are also responsible for protecting the Realm from dangers within it. Incursions from fey creatures, corrupted sorcerers, and the restless dead all plague the Realm and it is the Guardians that are charged with dealing with these threats.

By making the focus of the game about playing heroes charged with doing heroic things, defending the Realm, bringing justice, and keeping the peace, and not about pillaging ancient civilizations or fighting Evil, I hope to escape some of the baggage that I dislike from D&D.

That, however, is a for another post.

Understand that I like this idea, but this is me trying to help.

Is the Realm in a valley encircled by mountains? Are there multiple mountain fortresses around this land locked Realm?
Or is there a strange fresh-water Ocean off to one side which has a stream that flows through large cliffs, this allowing “access” to waterborne horrors/threats as well?

No need for a disclaimer, Shawn. I may not always like criticism but if it’s constructive I won’t scream too much. 🙂

As I envision it, the Realm is cut off from the rest of it’s continent by mountains and surrounded by sea at the other quadrants.

So, yeah, I suspect that water-bourne threats will exist too. Invasion, as a plot point, I’m leaving up the individual GM.

Good, I will disclaim less then.

So the possibility of a two stage program of training.

1st in the mountains, then by the sea?
Or verse vica depending on the proximity to one training area or the other?

Or a peninsula along which the mountainous region cuts as a natural barrier, still maintaining the possible 2 step program, but certainly enhancing the naval emphasis of the country/history/culture.

Perhaps a two-stage training program, sure. Or, the Guardians could rely on getting recruits from the coastal areas that are already skilled sailors?

Not the most reliable system, certainly, but it might jibe with the Background system I’m working on for character creation. 🙂

Well see how things turn out. It may just end up that the Guardians have training centers throughout the Realm to leverage different useful skill groups.
