Work Commute

I didn’t know what to write about today, so I thought I’d talk about my commute to work.

These days, I work about ten blocks from home. Most days, I walk to work. This gets me some exercise, saves me money on gas and wear and tear on our car, and it’s surprisingly pleasant.

In Ithaca, we lived out in the country so I had to drive to work everyday. Oh, I probably could have ridden a bike into town but, even with the hills, it probably would have been a long commute. I mean, the drive into town was only ten minutes or so by car, so biking it would have been theoretically possible . . .

Suffice to say, I never rode a bike in Ithaca. Going further back to Iowa City, I remember that I used to walk everywhere. I used to ride the CamBus too, but I remember walking quite a bit.

All this walking, though, I think it tends to make me less tolerant of taking long drives and that is kind of a problem.  You see, there just isn’t much for us to do in Beloit. Oh, there are a fair number of bars and restaurants, so as long as all you want to eat is Italian, Mexican, or diner food, you’ll be okay. If you want Thai or something more exotic, you’re driving somewhere.

The attitude of most Wisconsonians seems to be much more driving tolerant. Driving an hour or more is just the price you pay for a little entertainment, which is kinda crazy. Of course, we’ve bought into this to a lesser degree in that we frequently drive down to Rockford if we want to see a movie or get some Thai food. That’s also where our FLGS is if we want to check out games.

Is there a moral to this story? Not that I know of. I’m just rambling.
