Busy Weekend (for us)

We had quite the busy weekend. Britt has gone into high gear, preparing for the Fall semester while she’s still moving equipment and other stuff from the old science building into the new fancy-schmancy science building.

Friday, we drove down to Rockford to see The Dark Knight, which was very necessary as life is quickly becoming full of spoilers despite my best efforts to avoid any mention of the movie. Personally, I thought the move was good. Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker was good, and very nuanced. Maggie Gyllenhaal did a good job as the replacement Rachel Dawes. The rest of the cast was pretty good too.

Of course, the movie’s title was quite apt considering how unrelentingly dark the whole thing was but I liked it so I’m not upset about it. If I had any complaint at all, it would be that I’d like to see Batman use a few more detective skills; more brain, less muscle. He is the Dark Knight Detective, you know.

Also on Friday, we stopped to upgrade my cellphone. The old one’s battery had been acting wonky for a while now, so we stopped at the Verizon store where I got one of the slick, slidey Chocolate phones. Why someone needs so many toys on a phone isn’t quite clear to me, but I’m sure I’ll find some use for them.

To top off the day on Friday, we had some folks over to play boardgames. It was pretty light going with a game of Lascaux and another of Gavitt’s Stock Exchange (which Boardgamegeek tells me is also published as Pit).

Saturday we took our weekly trips to the Farmer’s Market and supermarket for our farm share and other food necessities, respectively. Then Britt headed into work to continue the heavy lifting while I spent a ridiculous amount of time making a Character Creation Cheat Sheet and Maneuver Cards for Houses of the Blooded on Sunday. In retrospect, I doubt the Maneuver Cards will be as necessary/useful as the Chargen Cheat Sheet was but we’ll see how things go.

Sunday, we got together to make Houses of the Blooded characters. Due to scheduling constraints, that was really all that we had the time for. Now I’m really looking forward to seeing how the game works in play! The game looks like it’s going to be me, Britt, Alicia, and Alicia’s friend Robert, who expressed some interest in the game after she described it to him. James has also expressed interest in playing if his schedule works out but we’ll see how things pan out. Robert was sort of a last minute addition to the group, but, despite breaking our usual modus of meeting new gamers before we game with them, he appears to be a cool guy and he didn’t balk at the  untraditional wackiness of the Houses rules, so we’ll cross our fingers and see how things go.
