Heartbreaker #1: ability scores

Despite my realization last year that I prefer diceless gaming (ala Amber and Everway), I still enjoy playing around with die mechanics and game designs with dice. Also, for whatever reason, I’m rather stuck on d20 mechanics, likely due to the OGL and the overwhelming presence of that ruleset in gaming.

I’m using the standard array of Ability Scores (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma) but I’m boiling them down to just the modifiers (-3 to +4).

Ability score bonuses cost a number of points equal to the modifier plus the modifiers leading up to it. So, a +4 costs 10 points (1+2+3+4), a +3 cost 6 points (1+2+3), etc. Lowering an ability score provides 1 additional point for each point the score reduced.

Ability score –> Cost

+4 –> -10, +3 –> -6, +2 –> -3, +1 –> -1, +0 –> 0, -1 –> +1, -2 –> +2, -3 –> +3

Players get 10 points to spend on their ability scores. None of a PC’s ability scores can start play below -3 or above +4.

This should provide an ability score range that looks like this:

+4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0

+3, +2, +1, 0, 0, 0

+3, +1, +1, +1, +1, 0

+2, +2, +2, +1, 0, 0

+2, +2, +1, +1, +1, +1

+4, +2, 0, 0, 0, -3

+4, +1, +1, +1, 0, -3

+4, +1, +1, 0, 0, -2

+4, +1, 0, 0, 0, -1

+3, +3, +1, 0, 0, -3

+3, +2, +2, +1, 0, -3

+3, +2, +2, 0, 0, -2

+3, +2, +1, +1, +1, -2

+3, +2, +1, +1, 0, -1

+2, +2, +2, +2, +1, -3

+2, +2, +2, +2, 0, -2

+2, +2, +2, +1, +1, -1

I’ve clearly skipped some combinations in there, but I think I’ve covered the majority of the options. Mostly, I just didn’t want to mess around with multiple negative ability scores.
