This American Life, Live!

Thursday night, Britt and I drove down to Rockford for This American Life Live! This was a national event featuring Ira Glass and several TAL regulars doing a live show in NY that was broadcast to over four-hundred movies screens across the U.S.

Now, Britt and I have seen Ira Glass before, in the flesh even. His was one of the few live performances that we went to while we were living in Ithaca. So, you might imagine that we are fans of This American Life and you would be right. When Britt heard on the TAL podcast that there was going to be a live show, we immediately found the local theaters that were going to be showing it and called to find out when tickets would be available. A week before the show, we got tickets.

The show itself was good. The theme was ‘returning to the scene of the crime’ and there were some good stories, including Mike Burbiglia talking about being hit by a drunk driver, Starlee Kine talking about a visit to clinic for therapy, and Dan Savage talking about the death of his mother. Dan Savage’s story in particular was quite powerful and he was on the verge of breaking down while telling it.

To cap the evening, they had a special musical guest: Joss Whedon. Mr. Whedon sang one of the songs that he wrote for the Dr. Horrible DVD commentary. It was pretty amusing.

Anyway, if you get the chance, I recommend seeing Ira Glass and/or TAL live. In fact, there is going to be an encore performance on May 7th of the show that we saw so check it out if you’re interested.

Unfortunately, this coincided with my trip up the North Shore, and so I missed the opportunity to see it.
