Spider Robinson is not Robert Heinlein

I finished reading Variable Star the other day. It is a book written by Spider Robinson from an outline created by Robert A. Heinlein before his death. Long story short, don’t believe all those silly quotes on the book that Spider Robinson is the new Heinlein.

The book was enjoyable and it had many of the qualities of a Heinlein book but it was missing something. I’m still trying to work out what, specifically, about it that distinguished the work (one guess, Heinlein on the typewriter) but I don’t know that it’s that big a deal.

So, read the book if you’re a Heinlein fan, realizing that it’s another writer’s homage to a great master of SF. It was okay and it’s made me want to go re-read some of my Heinlein favorites. Take that for what you will.
