Behind the Times

The fourth edition of Dungeons & Dragons has been on shelves for nearly a year now. I still haven’t played it. I really want to play it.

This is not an unusual situation.Roleplaying, for me, revolves around the series or campaign. A good game is about delving into the characters and the setting with the interplay of the two creating resonance. When the setting influences the characters and the characters influence the setting, both creating new and unexpected changes and variations, that is where the awesome lies.

This is the general mode of our gaming group, too. Shifting gears from one game to another is a significant process which makes it difficult to simply pick-up a new game and give a test-drive.

Sure, I could go looking for another group, folks willing to try out something new but that feels like a lot of effort for an unknown reward. Also, as an adult, it was hard enough to get this gaming group together. I don’t know whether I want to do that again if I don’t have to.

Would you like to try it as a one-shot, just to see how it plays?

I find it amusing that you keep trying to lure me to Madison, Tim. 😉

Really, though, I *do* appreciate the offer. I’ve already signed up to play a 4E slot at Origins so I’ve got it covered.
