The Benefits of Home Ownership

So, now I’ve got this dumpster in my driveway.

That’s the punchline. Let’s start over.

It’s been a little over two years since Britt and I bought a house. The house is great. We like the house a lot. There are, however, some down sides.

First, we live on a high traffic street near a corner with a stop sign. Occasionally, traffic is loud. Also, occasionally, traffic is ridiculously loud such as when the random biker gang goes by or perhaps when Mr. Loudstereo needs to get to work. Until you live on a high traffic street it is really hard to understand how much aggravation you have to deal with because of it.

Second, we live next to a multi-family rental unit. Originally, our neighbors on that side weren’t too bad. Now, though, we’ve got a very, shall we say, boisterous and drama-prone family living next door and, man, do they have a lot of friends. Friends who don’t believe in mufflers. Or bedtimes. Or that other people might like to be sleeping at 2am. I think you get the picture.

Back to my dumpster, though.

So, we bought our house about two years ago. A little while ago we learned that there was some rotted wood in one of our exterior walls due to inadequate flashing on the roof of our front porch. This has allowed water into one of our walls and that water has seeped out to damage our hardwood flooring.

Yeah, it’s pretty awesome.

Well, after the Saga of Getting an Estimate (which you’ll just have to wait to hear the next time I get cranky and feel like talking about home-ownership), we have finally hired a contractor to fix our house. They start on Monday. They put a dumpster in our driveway today so that they are ready to go on Monday.

So far, I’m impressed. We’ll see how things end but the start is looking good.

Yeah, I’m not really sure what the benefits of home-ownership are after reading this post, either.ย  ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ugh. You should have them install heavy-duty recording studio soundproofing while they’re working on the place. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Tempting.

I wonder how much that would cost . . .

I feel your pain. We have noise from the planes that go right overhead several times a day, noise from the nearby project on East Washington, and have had our share of 24-hour neighbor drama. Maybe someday we should all retire to farm houses in the country.

Maybe next week I’ll blog about my idea for a gaming commune/community, Tim. ๐Ÿ™‚

Y’know, now that it’s gone, I realize I never liked having a front wall on our house anyway. I think I’m gonna tell them not to put it back.

Uh, I like having a front wall. It keeps the monsters out.

The hole was not so big… It would still keep _large_ monsters out.
