Netbook: acquired!

Two weeks ago I finally bit the bullet and ordered a netbook.I ordered an Asus Eee PC 1005HA and it was on my front porch two days later. Then I had to plug it in for eight hours before I could use it, which was a test of patience. Somehow, I survived.

Despite my misgivings, I broke down and got a netbook with Windows XP on it. In the end, I went with the devil I knew over waiting a year or more for something else. It was the right choice.

Now, I’ve got a light, portable laptop-ish device with decent battery life that I can actually take places. It does just about everything that I want (except run Alpha Centauri, but that isn’t a big deal), weighs about two-pounds less than the laptop I’ve had for about six-years, can go for a couple of days without being plugged in, and doesn’t feel like I’ve got a hot-plate on my lap when I’m using it on the couch.

The down-side is the small screen, which I only occasionally find frustrating. When I do, I go use my 24″ iMac and remind myself that specific tools for specific tasks is a good thing.

It can’t run a 10 year old game? Dubious.

Needs a CD-ROM drive for Alpha Cen.

Couldn’t you use a virtual cd drive to run Alpha Cen? Not to suggest ways of making time-sinks more possible, but that ought to solve the problem. Make an image of the cd, and use a virtual drive.

    Problem solved.

I suppose I could do that, Dan. If I knew how!

Seriously, I guess I could google to find the answer.
